Nestled in a valley just past Tauweru , in the Wairarapa, my lavender farm is situated on the Castlepoint Road, 17kms from Masterton.
It was established in 2000 having been grazing land. Work quickly happened and my late husband Ken planted over 2,000 plants. This area has numerous lime outcrops, very hot summers and very cold winters which contribute to successful growing.
Strongly believing in the properties of lavender, I have continued development with passion. I currently grow grosso, pacific blue, foveaux storm and molten silver.
My favourite products are essential lavender oil and lavender salve. A perfumer has described my oil as “powerful, pure and elegant”; my customers say that my salve is “magical”.
As the area affords a rich harvest, my need has been to further my business with some exporting of oil, which has happened to Israel and China.
I have been on the executive of NZLGA (New Zealand Lavender Growers Association) and have taken part in the TALGA oil competitions where our grosso oil was placed 7th.
Further development of the property has been to plant 90 olive trees, koroneiki and frantoio varieties. The koroneiki trees are producing abundantly.
My partner John McDonnell and myself have a further passion which is painting in watercolours and acrylics. This creates a balance to life. We love to exhibit in the NZ Academy of Fine Arts.
